Module 3: Zero Waste, Zero Carbon

Overview of module three

Module three is about changing attitudes from discarded materials as waste to discarded materials as resources. When food scraps are kept separate from other materials like glass, plastics, paper and metals, these materials are kept clean and can be recycled. It is only when food scraps and other materials are mixed together that they become ‘waste’.

Doing the right thing is about keeping food scraps separated out, not about what is most convenient. When we take care to sort our discarded materials, we can significantly reduce our waste, moving towards ‘zero waste.’ Reducing waste is a climate action.

Module three contents:

  • Moving towards becoming a zero waste school

  • Resource recovery stations- shifting mindsets away from ‘waste’ to resources

Using resource recovery stations

In this video teacher Cameron Stephen discusses his zero waste initiatives at Murrays Bay Intermediate School (MBI), Auckland.

Resource recovery stations can make the most of resources, reducing waste dramatically.

When sorted properly, about 80% of all classroom materials are recyclable or compostable.
